What’s In Your Wallet??

June 28, 2010

We have so much stuff in our society. For example, if I decided not to shred and trash all of the junk mail I get, I would soon be forced out of the house. In a third world country the people there could probably build a house out of a years worth of my junk mail, yet to us it is only trash. We live in a culture and daily experience which would be unreal to much of the rest of the world’s people.
In our media we are constantly being urged to get the latest thing, yet if we succumb, as soon as we buy the new thing, it is worth less each day, until after the passage of time it is worth nothing. We are paying money (often borrowing) to get things which depreciate so fast that we will never see the worth of our investment, if it can even be called an investment. We are living in a cultural trap, in a world which has us in a choke hold. There is no way you can live a relatively normal life here without incurring debt. So the only alternative is to get on the treadmill and try to make the money to pay for all of those loans, etc. A treadmill? Yes, because we are running hard and getting nowhere.
That is what makes Jesus’ words so poignant.

“16 Then he told them a story: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. 17  He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’ 18 Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods. 19 And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’

21 “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”

22 Then, turning to his disciples, Jesus said, “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear. 23 For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing. 24 Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any birds! 25 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? 26 And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things?”

Luke 12:16-26 (New Living Translation)

Just what is it we are after in this life? Is it worth it to gather so much stuff and then  have to worry about keeping it clean, maintained, safe and pay taxes on it and insure it? To worry about protecting a car, or boat or house from decay or robbers? Is there a point to all of this?

I would like to suggest that we have been going about this way of living all wrong. we do not need to go to the Bible to discover how to live in this culture, how to make it, how to get by. You see the fruits of this approach all around us, people being foreclosed on, people laid off from jobs they thought would last, and more dire economic news each day. The problem is that we are looking in the wrong places. If we look at the Bible and try to figure out what God is saying to us then in actuality we are still depending on our own intellect for guidance, because we are so imperfect and limited, seeking guidance from our intellect is a dead end. God has made His Spirit available to us so that we might be able to live in a Spiritual context, so that He can interpret Scripture for us, so we might be guided by Him, so we might live in Him, and learn to depend on Him alone.
Therefore we need to go to Jesus and ask him what He wants us to do, and how to live. We need to drop everything and listen to Him, because He is the only one who understands fully what our lives should be. We should have been going to Him first, all along.

So pardon me if I ask, but where are your treasures?

Jesus says I love you

June 18, 2010

I was looking back over some older journal entries, and I ran across one which I believe speaks to all of us. There are journal entries I have received which are intended for my eyes alone, but this one seems to speak to people who seek Him in general.

“There are many days in a year. You are constrained by the number of them. You are limited by time, I am not, this is one of the things which you will always have trouble understanding so long as you are constrained by time, so long as it tugs at you and disquiets you.
I am invading the temporal. My words to you and My visions often transcend time, they are usually not only for the minute you received them. They can often be read, the next day, week, or years later and still have a valid message.

What do the infinite purposes and things of God have to do with you? They have everything to do with you, it is through the reality and power of My love that My blood was shed for you. It is surely through the reality and power of My love that we have anything in common at all.
Oh, but that is enough.
It is through My love and My Spirit that I can and I want to live in you, live through you, and pass My life on to others.

This is the reason why so many religious people do not get My life, My power. They separate My love from My word. Instead of loving you, they say I make demands of you. Instead of freely forgiving, they place conditions on My forgiveness and thereby estrange the very ones I came to call to Myself.
I wish to call any and all who want or need my life, My healing, My intimate friendship. The religious want to make an exclusive club which they control. To borrow one of your common phrases “They’ve got a lot of nerve!”

If you hearken to the words of the religious they will love(?) and accept you. Yet I say, if you hearken to their words and live by them and seek to please them. You will live in a wasteland devoid of My love, and full of confusion for their contradictions are many, and worst of all completely outside of My will and guidance.

In the mystery of My purpose and love I will allow many to wander in this wasteland, then when I approach them with true water for their thirst, true food for their hunger. They will jump into My arms and never leave Me for they have already experienced the despair and purposelessness of human schemes. Human plans are hatched by the human mind, they are nurtured by the human ego and they have the stench of pride and the enemy all over them.

So now I offer to any who will, My own self. In Me you will find true purpose. In Me you will have My true love, in Me and from Me you will have fulfillment and happiness. My joy is a priceless gift, yet you shall have it in abundance.

If you will have Me, I am yours for this is the bond of My love, My heart to your human heart, without this bond nothing extraordinary will happen. Without this bond they might as well forget the Scriptures about the signs that follow those who know Me, for without this bond, heart to heart they do not know Me at all. How could they? Through My Spirit you will find that My love is the code which unlocks all of the difficult things in Scripture. It is My love which makes unconditional forgiveness possible. My love unleashes the power of the Holy Spirit (something else they deny). So without My love there is no real understanding, no hope, and certainly no power.

Let Me offer you a better way. Come to know My priorities and you will come to know My heart. Love comes first, it is pre-eminant. It is not incidental, it is not an add-on, it is not optional. Through My love your life will make sense. A life of following My heart is a life which falls in line with My will. No concoction of the human mind and heart can follow My will because pride and envy infect everything of human origin, and hatred and fear are sure to follow. My love is free of these impediments, these gross failings. When My love moves in, the darkness has to flee.

So you ask where do I find this wonderful gift? I tell you plainly it is only found in close communion with Me, spend time with Me, get to know Me, allow Me to show you how much I care for you.
You are My foothold in this sad world, My beach head, from here, from now on, My true word will go forth. Tell them about My love.”

The Pit In The Bottom Of My Heart

June 10, 2010

In the course of our lives with Jesus, He begins to heal us. It is a continual process as He digs deeper into our hearts, and roots out the hidden faults and traumas we own. It is all a part of dying to the flesh, yet at times we might wish we could just get nailed to a cross and get it over with, for He often heals us one layer at a time as we give it up to Him. It is a process because the wounds run deep, the sources of them hidden in the mists of time. He will make you aware of hurts from the past, things you had long forgotten. The purpose of this is for you to hand them over to Him and be rid of them. Yet many of us brood over the old hurts, instead. While I was brooding once recently, He told me this in a journal entry.

“David, in the depths of your heart there are more terrors than any you will find in the physical world. That is what makes the world of men so dangerous, each person has his or her own pit in the bottom of their heart, and they dredge up the worst parts of their character from it. The pit is comprised of all of the extreme disappointments and close calls in a person’s life. It contains all of the betrayals and perceived injustices the person has experienced in their life. The pit is full of the stuff that horror stories are written from, it is the source of revengeful motives, deeply held fears, unholy desires, and many another of the person’s shortcomings. Many people have shoved the pit and it’s fetid fruit so far into the back of their minds that they are almost completely unaware of it’s influence over their lives.

It is too much to expect that a person would turn from these foundations of their persona and walk away, for indeed they believe that this is who they are. With fleshly eyes one cannot see beyond the pit, it limits us and walls us in. It is the familiar skyline of our lives, in the flesh it is impossible to abandon the pit, but with the Spirit all things are possible.

Hand over your deepest fears, hatreds, and resentments, let go of them and look to Me to fill the void. I will not leave you in this condition. I am the one person in your life who can be relied upon. I am by your side, and in your heart. After I heal the rift in your heart you can begin to build anew, and I will supervise the new, it will all be sound, with firm foundations. You will cease to be the same old man, you will become a new creation.”
